MP George Galloway wins young supporters

From: Ealing Respect

Respect MP George Galloway's visits to Ealing Southall on Saturday and Sunday won over many new young supporters for candidate Salvinder Dhillon.

Seventeen year-old student Farhan Asghar was so impressed that he joined Respect yesterday, after the MP spoke to a crowded room above the TKC restaurant on Southall Broadway. "He was intriguing. He exposed the hidden truths behind Labour election promises. It seems they will do anything for money," said Farhan.

On both afternoons Galloway stopped to receive greetings from well-wishers as he made his way amongst the busy streets. Young and old, male and female, Muslim and Sikh, were all pleased to see him and posed for photos. George repeated his confident prediction that "Salvinder Dhillon will be your man in Westmister, not Westminster's man in Ealing Southall. He has all the experience, skill and integrity necessary to deserve and win your respect on 19th July."

Elsewhere in Southall sixteen year-old Jasmine Chohan and her 18 year-old sister Jaskiran, plus two friends, toured King Street with a megaphone and stickers, getting Respect's message across to the huge youth population of this constituency, where one in four residents were under 18 at the time of the 2001 census. "Time after time local young people spoke about the obvious contradiction between the millions being spent on war and the poverty of local services, especially in housing and transport", explained Jasmine.

Salvinder Dhillon added that "Respect had 80 supporters out canvassing yesterday. The presence of George Galloway helps us to remind voters that our party is growing fast across the country, and that they shouldn't hesitate to convert their agreement with our policies into actual votes. We are confident that the opportunist and insulting behaviour of the main parties will backfire on them. If you offer true respect then you can earn it."

Salvinder Dhillon also attended the Candidates' Question Time at Ealing Town Hall yesterday, organised by trade unions on the general theme of public services.

"It seems they will do anything for money," said Farhan (17) after listening to Gorgeous George who is not even a tad mercenary.

this is jasmine from the article! Sal should have won the election, the problem is people in southall vote by tradition...not by looking at party policies and that's what frustrates me the most. Look at labour now, are they anywhere to be seen? i think not...they come around at the time of the elections and then go into hibernation.....that's why southall is in the state it is.
